I have the analyzer set to display 10 Hz to 20 kHz, though Sony can easily reproduce audio signals to almost 100 kHz on the analog outputs. To see how this scale works, give my recent article on decibels a read. First, the vertical scale is in decibel volts. To make sense, I need to explain what you’re looking for on the analyzer for the rest of this article. Frequency-based analysis of the Sony XAV-9500ES playing a 1 kHz test tone. Let’s look at that same signal in the frequency domain using my QA402 audio analyzer. The image above shows the output of the Sony XAV-9500ES multimedia receiver playing a 1 kHz test tone at volume 50.Īs we advance, let’s focus on what’s happening with the AC waveform, since that’s what makes up audio signals and is crucial to our understanding of harmonic distortion. The measurement shown on the scope above is at a level of 5.28 volts RMS. In the example below, I’m playing a 1 kHz test tone on the impressive Sony XAV-9500ES multimedia receiver I reviewed in early 2022. The person making the measurement will set the scope to determine the speed at which the waveform is sampled (in milliseconds or microseconds per division) on the horizontal scale and the voltage per division on the vertical scale. ![]() Looking at an AC voltage on an oscilloscope, we can see the amplitude move up and down as the trace moves across the screen. The yellow trace in the image above represents the 14.44-volt output from my power supplies. If we look at a DC voltage, we see that the level remains constant as the trace scans across the screen. An oscilloscope measures and displays voltage over a period of time. If we take things a step further, we can look at these or similar signals using an oscilloscope. Here’s the 14.44-volt output voltage of my power supply bank measured on a multimeter. If we switch the meter to measure AC voltages and carefully poke the test leads into an electrical outlet in our home or office, we’ll see around 120 volts. If we set our multimeter to measure DC voltage and connect it to a car battery, we’ll see around 12.8 volts. A multimeter is a device that can measure DC or AC voltage, resistance and current flow. Let’s start with something much less confusing than an oscilloscope or audio analyzer – enter the multimeter. Let’s Start with Some Definitionsīefore we dive into distortion, we need to understand the difference between the frequency and time domains. It’s a complex subject and requires looking at signals in the frequency domain rather than the time domain. Several statements in the video and the comments made it clear that people don’t understand the concept of audio signal distortion. Last week a friend of mine sent a link to a YouTube video by Steve Meade, who was experimenting with line output converters using an oscilloscope and an SMD DD-1+ distortion analyzer. ![]()

Start by sending some signal to the return track in a buildup section. Things will get even more interesting when the effects on the return tracks are automated. For this effect we will be using sync.Īutomation is a necessary function to keep things moving and interesting in your production. Sync: This parameter causes the delayed signal to either be synced to the project tempo or free from it.For this effect the beat offset % will adjust the delay time and since we have it in Repitch mode this will cause the pitch shifting effect on the delayed signal. I normally use this for creating swung delays or grooves with drums. The beat offset percentage allows you to shift your delayed signal away from the original so it is not perfectly in time. For this effect, link the channels to control one delay time for both channels. Link and Beat Offset %: The link button links the delay times of the left and right channels to be the same.Higher values equal longer delay times and longer effect tails to work with. I think of this as controlling the amount of delayed repetitions that will take place. Feedback: The Feedback percentage controls how much of the delayed signal is fed back into the delay unit itself.Jump: Jumps directly to the next delay time value and is more abrupt which may cause pops and clicks.įor this effect we want to choose Repitch so that when we gradually change the delay time it will create a pitch rising effect.Īdditional parameters that need adjusting on Simple Delay:.Fade: Creates a smooth crossfade between the delay time changes.Re-pitch: This causes a pitch variation to the delayed signal and is the main component of creating this effect!.The Simple Delay has three transition modes for how it switches between these changes in delay time (accessed by control clicking on the Simple Delay device title bar): Essentially it will cause some abrupt changes to the delayed signal. Imagine you are driving a car a hundred miles an hour and then suddenly you are forced to transition down to 20 miles an hour instantly, there will be some abrupt changes! This is similar to what happens if you change the delay time on the Simple Delay while it is processing audio. Tension-building can come in many forms, from subtle volume shifts to intense pitch rising effects. ![]() Proper tension-building makes the drop feel right and helps develop contrast and interest in your track. This tension leads to a desire to be resolved, coming to a place of resting and completion. When something is rising in pitch, it creates a sense of dissonance and tension. The answer is in the musical concept of tension and release. Why have build-ups become such an integral part of dance music? Today I’ll going to show you how to create a pitch build effect that incorporates these tension-building theories using the Ableton Simple Delay. So how do you build tension and keep the listeners interest? For me tension building can be done in a couple of ways such as a gradual move to a higher pitch, repetition of sounds and dynamic volume shifts. Tension-building effects: if used correctly they allow you to keep your audience following along with you until the end of a song.
